Woman stages sit-in after refusing to wear face mask in Costco supermarket

A woman sat down on the floor and refused to budge in a Costco store after being asked to wear a face covering.

Claiming it was against her “constitutional rights” the woman took umbrage at staff enforcing the requirement to wear a face covering to limit the spread of coronavirus in the store in Hillsboro, Oregon, on the West Coast of the United States.

Video footage of the encounter is the latest example of Americans reacting badly to being asked to don face coverings to go viral online.

The footage shows staff confront the woman, who actually has a face covering hanging from one ear when she says it against her constitutional rights to be forced to wear it.

A staff member tells the woman that she only has to inform her of a medical condition which would exempt her from wearing a face covering.

The woman admits she does not, to which the employee says: “Well then, you have to wear it. You have to wear your mask in public. This is private property.”

The staff member tells her to “come back another time” after the woman snaps “I will not” when told she must put the mask on.

Asking to speak to the “boss”, the annoyed woman is told: “He’s gonna require the same. If you want to step outside here I’ll have him come meet you outside.

“You need to do that, it’s our policy. We’re going to walk outside.”

But rather than do as asked, the woman sits down on the floor of the store, right by the entrance and forcing other customers to walk around her to enter and leave the warehouse store.

The store worker asks if she can get the woman a chair outside the store where there is a place to sit, and offers to help her up.

But the unhappy customer merely stands up and moves a few steps away before sitting back down again.

The store manager shows up to deal with the matter, and the footage captures the woman saying: “I’m not leaving. Do you want to carry me? I am an American. I have constitutional rights!”

The footage does not show how the matter was ultimately resolved.

In June, Starbucks barista is set to receive more than £47,000 [$58,000] in tips after a customer tried to shame him for not serving her while she was not wearing a mask.

In May we reported how a shop worker was left bemused after a customer told him she cut a hole in her coronavirus mask so she could breathe more easily.
